Trains are Still Great Transportation

Written by trishfms on . Posted in Transportation

With fast cars, fast planes, and cruises we seem to have forgotten one of the older forms of transportation in our country…the locomotive! We see them or hear their loud horns from a distance, usually assuming they are zooming by carrying big loads across the country, forgetting that they can also be a great mode of transportation for people!

A typical train’s seats are as comfortable as regular plane seats. They aren’t plush like first class, but they do just fine. They have PLENTY of leg room which can be really hard to come by on a plane! They still have drop down trays that come down from the seatback in front of you, just like on a plane. The seats are only two by two, meaning two seats together on each side of the train, so you are never stuck in a middle seat! That is a great bonus. The windows are huge in comparison to airplane windows, so even if you are in the aisle seat instead of the window seat, you still have great views out multiple windows.

Because you aren’t traveling as fast as you do on a plane, it will take longer to reach your destination. So, if you are in a rush, this might not be the best choice for you. The benefits are numerous though. Aside from those already listed above, because of the slower speed and large windows, you get a great view the whole time. Of course, not everything you pass will be pretty, but depending on your travel route, you may really get to enjoy some beautiful views. On an airplane, your only view for most of the flight is clouds and sky.

Another great benefit to train travel is the baggage policy! If you are tired of paying up to fifty dollars just for taking a suitcase on your trip, then you will love this. You are allowed two personal items, up to twenty-five pounds AND two other items, up to fifty pounds FOR FREE! Take that, airplane industry! Even if you need to bring MORE (which is a lot of luggage), you are allowed two more bags, up to fifty pounds each for an additional charge of only twenty dollars each. The airlines can’t come close to touching this baggage policy.

What about food? If you have been on a plane lately, then you know that shorter flights consist only of drink services and a small snack like a LITTLE bag of peanuts or pretzels. Longer flights often offer food to purchase, but oftentimes it is in the form of a box lunch or snack. The days of hot meals are long gone. There are dining cars on trains and depending on the length of the trip, you will have different food options. Even short trips will offer an item like pizza – hot food! Longer trips have full meals. There are still overnight trains with sleeping quarters. If you choose this fun form of travel, the price of your ticket includes meals!
