Spring has sprung as you can tell and that means cleaning time, and well…let the whining commence. Throughout the land, you can hear that little rhyme being sung by mothers, “Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere. Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share.” This is usually followed by a cacophony of moans, groans, and whining. So, spring cleaning may not float everybody’s boat, but it definitely gets your house in order and feeling fresh again.

We will be sharing these tidbits in two blogs because we are sorry to tell you, but spring cleaning is a bit of a chore! We have quite a few suggestions, but if you follow them, we know you will be pleased with your clean, springtime home!
How did spring cleaning become a thing? There is no one concrete answer to that question. But, interestingly, it exists in cultures all over the world. The reasons may vary, but the tradition exists and continues throughout our modern world. We may no longer need to wipe all the soot off the walls from a long winter of burning coal, but we surely can find some modern tasks that need to be done.
One possible reason that spring cleaning is a thing relates to the length of the days. When our days are shorter and it gets dark earlier, it seems we do less housework and spend more time snuggled on the couch with a hot drink. This is an important ritual too. We spend all spring and summer scurrying about, enjoying the beautiful weather. Fall brings the new school year for many with all its tasks and sports commitments. Winter is a little bit of a break from all that. But, enough about winter…it’s spring, so let the spring cleaning begin!
Spring brings with it a sense of new life and freshness. Before starting a spring cleaning project, we highly recommend opening some windows. Letting in that fresh air, soft breeze, and springtime scent with a hint of warmth in the air just adds life to a task that may feel mundane. How is spring cleaning different from your normal daily or weekly cleaning? It usually consists of doing some tasks that don’t need to be done that frequently or seem to get neglected as we nestle down in the winter.
Look up! No, it’s not Superman. It’s spider webs!
They may have collected over the winter months. They are quiet and sneaky, so you often don’t realize they are up there, especially if you have vaulted ceilings. Get an extended pole duster or even a broom and knock down those winter tenants. If you don’t want to kill the spiders (if they are in the web), then once you have knocked them to the ground, scoop them up, and set them free in your yard to eat bugs for you!
Dust off things you don’t dust weekly.
That often includes your ceiling fans, especially if you leave them on all the time. When they are in motion, you can’t see that the blades have accumulated dust. Turn off the fan and wipe the blades. You can use any kind of duster for this, or Clorox has even come out with dusting wipes. They are pretty handy for tasks like this if your fans are within your reach.
Wash down windows from the outside.
You may have been cleaning your windows on the interior weekly with a glass cleaner, but the outside of the glass is probably covered with a light layer of dirt from winter wind. You may want to hose them off first, so that the window cleaner is just getting rid of streaks, instead of attacking a layer of dirt. It is helpful to remove the dirt first, so you aren’t just making mud with your window cleaner!
