Spring Breeze, Dazzling Daffodil, Apple Orchard – Huh?

You might be confused by the title of this blog. Well, as promised, it is the follow-up to our laundry blog. Those are just some of the names you might find on the bottles of laundry detergent and fabric softener in the laundry aisle of your favorite store. There has to be more to choosing these items than the smell, right? If only it were that easy, we could breeze down the aisle and grab the first scent that caught our eye, then be on our merry way. In actuality, it takes a little more thought than that.

There are a couple of things to consider when buying your laundry detergent and fabric softener. First, is there anyone in your household with sensitive skin? If so, then it really is essential to choose the right products or your loved ones could end up with itchy skin or even hives. There are several brands that offer laundry products designed for sensitive skin. Many of them are free of any scent. The added scents are often what irritates the skin. But, we like our clothes to smell fresh, so no scent is a bit of a bummer. You may want to try an environmentally-friendly, plant-based detergent. It may not cause skin irritation. This brings us to our second point.

Second, are you someone who tries to do your part to help the environment? This is not a trick question and we are not judging you! However, if this is something that is important to you, then you will probably want to consider the environmentally-friendly, plant-based detergents that we previously mentioned for sensitive skin. They are usually made with biodegradable products and usually come in bottles that are made from recycled materials and can be recycled again. It may seem like a small thing, but when you think about how many bottles of detergent you go through in a lifetime, it is a nice way to do your part.

On to fabric softeners...there are both liquid and sheet varieties. Again, if you have family members with sensitive skin, you will want to choose carefully. Fabric softener is not necessary as it has no cleaning properties. It is nice to pull out soft clothes from the dryer though as opposed to stiff clothes that won’t feel as comfortable. They also help with static which can be annoying. Be careful when using it with children’s pajamas, however. Some of them can reduce or negate the flame-resistant quality they possess. There are sensitive skin and eco-friendly fabric softeners available, as well.

Now, what about this new laundry phenomenon of smell-boosting crystals that are supposed to keep your clothes smelling fresh for an extra long period of time? Obviously, these are not a laundry essential. They also are very vague about their ingredients, so it is not easy to decipher how they will affect those with sensitive skin or what they might do to our environment. If you are really interested in boosting the scent in your laundry, particularly if you have to buy an unscented detergent for someone with sensitive skin, you can actually make your own scent booster with Epsom salts and essential oils, and it’s cheaper too!
