Moving after the loss of a loved one

Whenever someone experiences the loss of a loved one, it is a very difficult time. Along with grieving, those left behind are often lost in mounds of paperwork as they try to settle the affairs of their departed loved one. Because we have no control over when people pass away, those close to them may have already had a move planned prior to the loss of their loved one. What does that look like?

If you have recently lost a loved one, then we extend our sincere condolences to you and your family. We know that you have a lot of decisions to make. If a move was already planned, then you may be wondering if you should go forward with it. You may want to ask yourself why it is that you plan to move in the first place. Are you moving to take a better job or promotion? Are you moving to be close to family? Are you moving to live somewhere more affordable or that fits your lifestyle better? All of these are great reasons to move, so it is probably a safe and good decision to go forward with your plans.

People often use a move as a time to “purge.” They realize they don’t want to move a bunch of old junk that they never even used in their present home. They don’t need to keep Junior’s 4th-grade science project when Junior is now thirty-five years old with a 4th grader of his own! It’s a great time to donate clothes you no longer wear. Moving sales are a great way to get rid of items you don’t want to bring with you. You don’t have to give stuff away (unless you want to donate it), but don’t overprice it either. Remember these are items that you don’t want to pack and bring with you to your new home.

This is where it can get tricky. When a loved one has recently passed away, you may be wondering what to do with their items. Grief is a very individual process. Some of you may be ready to clean out your loved one’s closet and move forward. Others of you may find yourself sobbing at the very thought of it. Either response is perfectly acceptable! If you are sure you aren’t ready to part with items that remind you of your loved one, then pack them up and take them with you. If you are ready to get rid of them at some date down the road, that’s fine, but don’t rush yourself. If you aren’t sure if you are ready, then it is probably a good idea to take the items with you, as well. You don’t want to get rid of all their belongings in haste and then wish you had kept some of it. It’s okay to wait.
