Some of you are lucky enough to have lived on the Space Coast your whole life. Others have moved here for college or jobs. Many are military and government-employed families stationed at Patrick Air Force and Port Canaveral. And, some knew that retirement wouldn’t be sweeter anywhere else! Whatever brought you here, we know that it is a great place to be and wanted to share with you some of the upcoming fun to be had if you are here this summer.
All the libraries in Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera and beyond have fantastic activities available for children. Along with their regularly scheduled storytimes for babies and toddlers, they are also hosting a variety of other fun activities like Lego building, puppet shows, and crafts. Most local libraries also host summer reading programs to help children maintain their reading accuracy and comprehension over the summer, preventing the “summer slide.” These usually offer prizes for reading a certain amount of books per week. It is a great incentive to get your kids reading. Last year, they were even able to earn free movie tickets to Satellite Beach Cinema!
There are a vast array of one-day classes and week-long camps/clinics available through the Parks and Recreation Department in the different towns of Brevard County, as well. These range from almost every sport imaginable to cooking, dancing, music, art, and even etiquette! You can find the information about these classes online. It’s even more fun when your child joins with a buddy, so they can enjoy it and make a memory together. Plus, it’s often easier to try something new when you don’t have to do it alone.
There are currently a variety of indoor activity parks available for use when you and the kids need a break from the heat but don’t want to sit home. There is SkyZone which is an indoor trampoline park in Rockledge and Planet 3 which is also an indoor trampoline park in Palm Bay. There is Adventure HQ on Hwy 1 in Melbourne where you and the kids can attempt a fun “ninja warrior” course. There is also Pump It Up which is a fun indoor bounce area for kids. And, don’t forget FunTown in Melbourne, which offers an arcade, concession area, bouncing area, and rollerskating/rollerblading rink. All of these are air-conditioned!
What about the adults who don’t have children or want a little adult time? Yoga Garden of Melbourne is offering beginning yoga classes on Saturday afternoons in June. Don’t miss Food Truck Friday with food and music at Veteran’s Memorial Complex in West Melbourne the fourth Friday of each month. Cocoa Beach Main Street Festival occurs on the third Friday of every month and offers food, music, and vendors. There are also fun things to do like going to Painting With a Twist located in both Melbourne and Cocoa where you get to paint your very own masterpiece. Check them out online to see what paintings are being taught in the upcoming sessions.
If you live in the area, then you know we LOVE our sea turtles and do our best to protect them. Held on most Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout June and most of July you can partake in a Nighttime Turtle Walk at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. If all goes well, you will get to see a mama turtle lay her eggs, cover her nest, and return to the ocean. What a special and unique experience!
